International speaker, author and leader, Nancy Kline, was one of the keynote speakers at the recent Clean Conference, talking about how people think best in their own language - whether that is their own language of silence, their own language of words, their own first language, or their own first language sound. She told great stories, got us working in pairs, and was truly inspirational. As a speaker, she was still and made great use of generous pauses to give us time to think and inwardly digest what she was saying. The quality of her attention was palpable. She was practising - with a giant audience - what she preaches in relation to working one to one or in small groups.
When she finished, she stayed around to sign books, chat with people and have her photo taken with them. Then all of a sudden, Penny Tompkins came to fetch me - she wanted me to sign a copy of "Clean Approaches for Coaches" for Nancy Kline! I was a bit over-awed by this and definitely not still and calm like Nancy. My own language of silence (i.e. in my head) was saying, "I'm signing a book for Nancy Kline!!! What do I write? I cannot believe this is happening!" I was probably saying this out loud, too. And Nancy continued to stay calm and smile her lovely smile, and I calmed down too. Then we had our picture taken. I'm thinking it would be cool to just take this in my stride as an everyday kind of happening, but I still can't believe - I signed a book for Nancy Kline!!
