Listening: Book Recommendations

If you want to do some background reading on the topic of ‘Listening”, here are a few books I recommend whole-heartedly:

  • The Courage to Teach, by Parker J. Palmer. This is a great book about teaching and the need for teachers to listen well to pupils and to each other. Palmer talks about his own ‘sheepdog’ metaphor and how he was influenced by the Quaker movement.
  • Carl Rogers developed the idea of ‘attentive listening’ and wrote many books about listening and working with people. Two of my favourites are A Way of Being and On Becoming a Person.
  • Nancy Kline’s Time to Think is another great book about listening and questioning, with a similar philosophy.

“The human soul doesn’t want to be fixed, it simply wants to be seen and heard. The soul is like a wild animal – tough, resilient and shy. When we go crashing through the woods shouting for it to come out so we can help it, the soul will stay in hiding. But if we are willing to sit quietly and wait for a while, the soul may show itself.” — Parker J. Palmer, 1998
