What is Systemic Modelling?

Systemic Modelling is an approach for supporting groups to use clean questions and metaphor models to better understand one another and to develop the skills and capability to collaborate meaningfully.

A Systemic Modelling facilitator, having established an overall outcome for the process, introduces a series of engaging exercises and simple tools to encourage the group to develop metaphor models and to explore the differences between them.

During the initial process the facilitator detects patterns in individuals within the group as well as patterns in the dynamic across the group. The facilitator keeps track of those patterns that are aligned with the outcomes of the group and those that are incongruent.

The facilitator encourages the group to detect patterns in one another and to bring assumptions to one another’s attention.

Systemic Modelling was created by Caitlin Walker; after working with and observing David Grove and assisting Penny Tompkins and James Lawley as they were developing Symbolic Modelling. Caitlin combined David’s ideas with models from transactional analysis, systems thinking and NLP to produce an approach for facilitating groups to make the most of the individuals within them.
